Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) is a sturdy, perennial herb with bright yellow flowers and feathery leaves. Its main body is erect and glaucous green. This Ayurvedic herb grows in sun-lit areas and measures up to 2.5 m when it reaches maturity. Its stems are hollow, while its leaves grow up to 40 cm long. They have a dill-likeappearance though they are slightly thinner.
This plant grows dainty flowers that are produced in terminal compound umbels 5–15 cm wide. Each umbel section sprouts 20–50 tiny yellow flowers that grow short pedicels. While the fruit is nothing but a dry seed. These seeds are 4–10 mm long, half as wide/less with grooves on its surface.
